Will's Wild Weekend

WILD = FUN!

Will(iam), a.k.a. Varazs Kedvesem Final Legacy from our 2011 litter, spent 3.5 days with us over the Labour Day weekend. I had only seen Will once since he went to his new home at 8 weeks of age, so I was thrilled to get to know him as a two-year-old dog.  I decided to make it a really fun weekend for him.  After all, when "Grandma" (me) does a dog's nails, teeth and bathes him, something has to make up for those 'hardships'! LOL

So, on this weekend, Will went to a United Kennel Club (UKC) dog show, his first show ever!!  Below, it's not a perfect stack, but he was quite a natural at this 'beauty show' stuff.  Will came home with his first dog show ribbons and some UKC points!

The biggest and best fun, however, was Lure Coursing!!  Will had never done before either!

Day 1, Lure Coursing

I gave Will a practice run for his very first time on a course and he was perfect!!! Unfortunately, that practice run didn't count towards his title.  :-(

Will, watching the coursing from a comfortable spot.

That's a bunny??

Watching how the greyhounds do it

At the end of the practice run, he went to check out the 'bunnies' and got a little spooked by what they were - plastic bags.  When it came time to do his official run, he started off well but then turned around about 1/3 of the way through and didn't return to the lures.  No Q (Qualifying score) on Day 1.

Day 2, Lure Coursing

Will started off the course really well, and then did what any bird dog is bred to do - he POINTED the "bunny". And then, he abandoned the course and ran back to me.  He was more confident getting closer to the bunnies but didn't attack them (which is strongly encouraged by the judges!!).  I gave him two more practice runs and he wasn't perfect but he was improved so I decided to plunk down money for Day 3's test.

Will in a classic point with his L front leg lifted

Getting a little up close and personal with the 'bunny'.  Hmm, this doesn't smell like a rabbit!

Day 3, Lure Coursing

Will was definitely getting more excited by the coursing.  Last night, I "practiced" getting him all excited about a white plastic bag brought one with me to the test to tease Will and that really helped!! The weather was by and large, much cooler than the previous 2 days, although still quite humid.

On his first run, which if he did well, it would be Will's test run and if not, it would be his practice - LOL.  Will started out really well - YES!! And then he stopped and pointed!  Aarrggh.  If this were a field/hunt test, I would be jumping up and down for joy!! But it's a lure course where the dog is expected to chase (exactly what we don't want them to do in field tests).  Anyway, he wandered off a bit but then the light bulb went off in his head and he returned to the lures and started to chase them and went all the way around the course!  Whooppee!! But did Will pass?

Yes he did!!

We had an opportunity to do a practice run after getting his Q just to give him more experience.  I really wanted to video it for Will's owners and since my regular video camera wasn't focussing properly, I filmed it on my IPod. As a result, there is no zooming but at least it's clear(er).  And now Will has NO fear of those plastic bunnies any more!!

Will - last run of the day (literally!)

Was this fun Will?

Zzzzzzzzz
I think so!  Mission accomplished!

#15, #34 & #35

Title No. 15 for Tyro!

A new United Kennel Club Rally Obedience level 3 title = URO3 for Tyro along with a placement!  This is Tyro's 15th title.  He now exceeds my beloved Sasha who earned 14 titles in his lifetime.  And Tyro also earned 2 legs towards his UKC Companion Dog (CD) title this past weekend at the Grand River Kennel Club UKC shows & trials in Rockton, Ontario.

Titles  No. 34 & No. 35 for Miska

And the all-time achiever, Mrs. Wonder Dog, a.k.a. Miska.  Miska earned titles #34 & #35 this past weekend by completing her UKC Companion Dog title (UCD) and her Rally Obedience level 3 title (URO2), both in three straight trials and with placements.

When I saw the United Kennel Club's High in Trial rosettes hanging on the wall in the obedience/rally building, I really, really wanted to have one. Is that wrong??

Miska came very close on Saturday to earning one with her score of 100 in Rally but she was beaten in score time by a Corgi mix who moved much faster around the ring.  The Corgi team won two of these tosettes on Saturday.  All I wanted was one but Miska delighted me by earning two in the two obedience trials on Sunday.  They are HUGE! Bigger and taller than Miska but just the right colour for a Vizsla, don't you think?

W.A.W.

What A Week!

As weeks go in the life of dogs, this was one incredibly busy and very successful week for Varazs-bred Vizslas!!

Saturday, October 20, 2012
  • Miska completed her Cdn Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title. That was her 26th title!
  • Miska's daughter, Stella (2011 litter) finished her Rally Novice (RN) title in the Cdn Association of Rally Obedience with a score of 190 / 200.

Sunday, October 21
  • Miska earned her (and mine) highest score ever in obedience with a 197 / 200 in Open and a 2nd place.  That put her in #1 position for a Vizsla in Obedience in Canada for 2012 according to Canuckdogs.com.  Woo-hoo!!

Thursday, October 25
  • Diva, Miska's daughter from our 2008 litter, completed her Cdn Agility Intermediate title with a first place and the only dog to qualify in her height division.  This was my first Intermediate agility title ever - so another first (for me).

Saturday, October 27
  • Another of Miska's offspring, Bodi (also from our 2011 litter) was Best Male and Best of Winners completing his United Kennel Club (UKC) Championship. This is Bodi's 7th title and he's only 17 months old!
  • Tyro earned the second and third legs of his UKC Rally Level 2 (URO2) title with two fourth placements. This is his 14th title.
  • Miska also completed her UKC rally URO2 title (her 27th title) with two perfect (100 / 100) scores and a second and first place.
  • Diva earned two legs towards her rally URO1 title with two first place finishes.
  • Stella earned her first two conformation points taking Winners Bitch and Best of Winners.

Sunday, October 28
  • Miska earned her first two legs towards the UKC novice obedience title and finished in first place in both trials AND earned not one, but TWO High In Trials!  Her first score was a 194.5 and her second a 197/200!  Awesome work Miska!
  • Diva completed her rally URO1 title (her 10th title).
  • Miska took Best of Breed and a Group 3rd in UKC conformation in show #1.
  • Miska earned a UKC Total Dog award for earning wins in both conformation and performance wins.
  • In UKC show #2, Bodi took Best of Breed over his mom and two other Vizslas.
That amounted to five completed titles in one week on my dogs and two titles on Miska's kids.

Congratulations and big thanks to the owners of Stella and Bodi and kudos to my three dogs for their wonderful accomplishments!

Proud Mamas

Like any dog breeder and dog owner, I am very proud when my dogs accomplish something. This past weekend was especially exciting since Miska and her son Bodi (DOB May 31, 2011) each took top accolades at the Oxford Dog Sports United Kennel Club shows and trials.  Bodi took a Best in Show and Miska's rally-obedience scores of 100 and 98 earned her two High In Trial awards.  Here are a few more photos from the weekend, thanks to Corrine Sellars, Bodi's owner.

High In Trial & first UKC rally titles

Miska with her first High in Trial & score of 100 with judge Deb Beean, Ithaca, MI

Anyone who does obedience or rally-obedience likes to earn a High In Trial which means the dog has earned the highest score of all the dogs entered in a trial.  So I was thrilled that Miska earned not one but TWO HIGH IN TRIALs at the Oxford Dog Sports United Kennel Club rally-obedience trials held this past weekend in Princeton, Ontario.  I expected her to do well since she has several other rally and obedience titles but the venue was outdoors and the weather ranged from cool to damp, to drizzling to pouring rain to hot and steamy.  That means expect the unexpected or perhaps the expected since most Vizslas don't like doing anything in the rain unless it involves hunting and most dogs don't do well in extreme heat which we had on day 2.

Nevertheless, Miska didn't let me down and earned her UKC Rally Level 1 (URO1) title with 2 firsts and 1 second place along with the two High in Trials.  She also earned a qualifying score and second place towards her Level 2 title.  And her half-brother Tyro also earned his UKC Rally Level 1 (URO1) title with second and third placements and a Q towards his Level 2 title and a 4th place.

Top 10/Top 20

TOP 10 - UKC

I was surprised to receive certificates from the United Kennel Club informing me that Miska and Diva had tied for 5th place in Vizslas overall in the United States for 2010. There aren't a lot of Vizslas being shown in UKC conformation but it's always a nice touch to know one's dogs did well in such a big country!

TOP 20 - CKC
Diva and her brother Quest out of our 2008 litter between Ch Hubertus Quality Control FDJ and Am/Can/UKC/Int'l Ch Varazs Kiralyi Kedvesem Am/Can CD, Am/Can RE/ Am RAE, JH, FD, NAVHDA NA PRZ III, CGN finished in the top 20 in Canada in 2010.  Quest (Ch Varazs Kedves Quester) is #11 and Diva (Ch Varazs Kedves Quickstep) is #17. These results are unofficial as Dogs in Canada which tabulates the official results, only determines the Top 5 in each breed. Nonetheless, it's still a thrill to be in the Top 20!

Scenes from UKC dog show

Someone put together photos from the last UKC dog show that I attended with Miska and Diva in late January. Go to the 4:52 minute mark to see a few slides that we are in.

Diva's a Champion!

We 'missed' celebrating Diva's Canadian Championship because at the time, I miscalculated the number of points she had earned when she had her Group 4th placement at the Burlington Kennel Club show in late September.  According to Cdn Kennel Club rules, dogs can earn extra points if they take a group placement; the number of points are determined by the number of breeds present in the group.  That's where I went wrong. Diva needed 2 points to finish and I calculated there were only enough Sporting Dog breeds to make 1 point.  Perhaps I forgot to include Vizslas in the calculation because according to the CKC, she earned 2 points at that show and that was enough to finish her championship! It wasn't until I received her certificate in the mail 3 months later that I discovered she was a CKC Champion. And during that time, I thought she was sitting on the 'dreaded 9 point' position.

And so, this past weekend, I was showing Diva in United Kennel Club shows. Her mother, Miska, outshown her but the final judge of the day slightly preferred Diva over Miska and gave Diva the breed which finished her UKC Champion title on Sunday. She also earned a Group 2nd in the Gun Dog group but group placements in the UKC do not give any points.

UKC shows are very relaxed shows as no professional handlers are allowed to exhibit dogs. Only  owners or breeders can exhibit dogs.  There are many breeds that aren't yet recognized by the AKC or CKC so it's an opportunity to view some unusual breeds.  I got to see my first Braco Italiano and Redbone Coonhound for which many people mistake Vizslas.  Unfortunately, these two breeds weren't present on Sunday when I brought my camera so I didn't get a photo of them.

Anyway, Diva now has acquired 3 Champion titles from three different organizations:
  1. Canadian Kennel Club (Sept. 26, 2010)
  2. International All Breed Canine Assoc. (IABCA) (Dec. 12, 2010)
  3. United Kennel Club (Jan. 30, 2011)

Miska earns her 4th Champion title

4th Champion Title for Miska!

At the age of 7.5 years, Miska acquired her fourth Champion title today, competing in United Kennel Club (UKC) all breed shows. This is her 18th title to date!  She also earned two Group 3rd placements in the Gun Dog group under judges Andrew (Gene) Mills of Bonita CA and Deborah Allen of Farmville VA. The green ribbons are the Group 3rd ribbons.  Miska is now known as:

BIS (Veteran) Am/Cdn/Int'l/UKC CH Varazs Kiralyi Kedvesem FDJ, FD, NAVHDA NA Prize III, JH, Am/Cdn CD, Am/Cdn RE, Am RAE, CGN
aka "Miska Monkers"
