"Mother Nature may be forgiving this year, or next year, but eventually she's going to come around and whack you. You've got to be prepared."

Geraldo Rivera

A severe ice storm occurred on December 21, 2013 in Ontario and other NE states and we got whacked!! BIG TIME!! The rural area where we live in SW Ontario is heavily treed and damage was major and extensive. Thousands of people just in our municipality were without electricity and heat for days and weeks, including over Christmas. I have no photos of what our property looked like because we were away at the time but here is a video taken of a street in Brampton, Ontario (east of us) which gives you an idea of the devastation to huge, stately trees.

We have 10 acres and most of it is treed. Heavily ice-laden trees like you see in the video above, snapped like pretzels and brought down one hydro pole (we call it hydro here in Ontario) and smashed our transformer drum and damaged a second hydro pole running down our driveway. (We have 3 poles on our land.) A transformer drum carries 7,200 volts of power and reduces it to 240 for the house. Fortunately the wires were dead because all power was out in our area. We couldn't get a hold of any crews to come and repair our electrical lines since they were all busy restoring power to cities and towns. Crews were called in from out of province and from US states to assist in the clean up and restoration of power. There was almost no point because no one could get up our driveway anyway because of all the downed trees and major limbs.

It took over 1 month before we could get anyone out to clear our driveway, It took 2 more months to get our power restored in one of the coldest and longest winters on record. There were lots of reasons for that which I won't bore you with. Needless to say, our house was inhabitable for that length of time. Although we had the water turned off and the pipes drained, we still had some water damage inside the house but compared to many homes, ours was minimal. I try to look on the bright side - no trees actually fell on our house; damage inside was minimal; we saved on heating fuel and electricity and now we have a ton of firewood for our wood stove!! LOL. Our house was intact even though it's now inconvenient to drag dirty laundry to a laundromat because the valve to the washing machine is broken (we're still waiting for the insurance-approved appliance guy to replace it) and a pipe in our ensuite shower was frozen and we're waiting for the plumber to find a replacement & then get the shower retiled. Our roof also leaked because of an ice dam. But that's nothing compared to what people whose homes are completely destroyed in floods, wild fires, hurricanes or tornadoes have to deal with physically and psychologically.

This short video gives you a little bit of an idea of what we faced after all the snow melted. I know it looked far worse with ice on the trees back in December.
Shortly after breakfast not long ago, I was startled to see something furry in a dog bed next to Diva.

On closer inspection, it was definitely NOT a dog toy.

Sad to say, it was a dead baby chipmunk. Most likely Diva had brought it inside and I didn't even realize she had it in her mouth. Fortunately, she doesn't eat them!

Major Milestone for Miska!

This past weekend in Tempe AZ, Miska (born June 26, 2003) achieved her 40th title, earning her American Kennel Club Agility Excellent Standard Preferred (AXP) title. Of all the dogs I've bred, trained and owned, Miska has far exceeded all my expectations. She is SUPER DOG!!! And she is the most titled dog I've ever owned or bred. We've had a ton of fun over the past decade. And just think what we could/would have accomplished if I hadn't also been busy showing many of her littermates as well as her puppies!!

At 10.5 years of age, Miska isn't about to retire. She's still a very sound dog, in great physical and mental shape and we are still having waaaaaay too much fun in agility to retire. I am hoping there will be several more new titles to add to her name in 2014!!! Way to go Miska!!! I love you sooo much! Today, you made your papa (Sasha), mama (Nova) and me very, very proud.

Earlier in 2013, our beloved Nova (CH Ferngold Varazs Innovation Can/Am CD, FDJ, JH, Can/Am RA, Am RE, Am RAE, CGN) was posthumously awarded the Tibor Reiter Trophy by the Vizsla Society of Ontario Inc. for the year 2012. This award recognizes one Vizsla annually that overall has demonstrated the highest level of versatility in a number of different sports. Eligible Vizslas must have a title in three areas, two of which must be Conformation and Field. Nova earned a total of 12 titles in four areas:

Conformation

Field

Rally-Obedience

Obedience.

Nova is the dam of 18 puppies and grand-dam to 12 and great-grand dam to many others. She is the second Vizsla of mine to earn this award. Our wonderful Sasha (Am/Can CH Varazs Kiraly Sassy Sasha Am/Can CDX FDJ TT CGC, 1992 - 2008) previously earned this award in 2007. Only one dog per year can earn this honor and I was very thrilled that it was presented to Nova, although sadly, she wasn’t with me to accept it since she passed away in June 2009. Nova, you are still loved, greatly missed and I think of you often. Until we meet again. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Miska, Diva and I had a fantastic 4-day American Kennel Club agility trial in Romulus NY at the end of September. Miska, especially, dazzled me with her performances except for Friday when she was totally 'off her game'. Don't know what had happened that day but the other 3 days, she was magnificent.

Miska came home with:

A Novice F.A.S.T. Preferred title - NFP

An Excellent Jumpers Preferred title - AJP (this is Miska's 37th title)

Two legs tiwards her Excellent Standard Preferred title

On the last trial of the four days in the Excellent Standard class, I mismanaged Miska on a 180 degree turn and as a result, she went past the 2nd jump instead of over it which resulted in a Refusal and not qualifying. Otherwise, she would have had a perfect, clean run and her title!! Aaaaarrrrrgggh!! Oh well!! Miska earned first and second places for all of her qualifying runs (7 of them!). I was thrilled with how Miska did, exceeding my expectations for her and for me.

I earned all those rosettes!!! (Miska)

And Miska's daughter, Diva, didn't totally disappoint. She also earned her Novice FAST title (NF) and two legs towards her Open Standard (OA) title. She was a train wreck in all of her Open Jumpers trials so control, focus and weaves are what we have to work on before she goes into any more trials. When she Q'd, she also earned placements in every pass - two firsts, two seconds and one third place. And she also earned one leg towards her AKC Lure Coursing Ability title. And her younger, half-brother Bodi earned his AKC Coursing Ability (CA) title at this venue.

All in all, it was a great Wine Circuit weekend!

I am thrilled and delighted that 9.5-year old Rufus, a.k.a. CH(ampion) Blackbullets Varazs Grof Rufus, a grand-dog to our beloved foundation bitch, Nekah, has been successfully placed in a new home following the death of his human dad. Initially, my concern was whether he had an issue with human males because of his negative reaction to my husband and step-son but I was given assurances he had never had problems before with males although I later learned he did try to bite one of the police officers who was in attendance at the home where his owner had died. (If only dogs could talk and tell us what they are thinking and feeling!)

Here are a few more pictures of Rufus while he hung out at my place for a week.

Because of the schedules and timing, it worked!!! We had a very successful weekend overall.

Elsie was Reserve Winners bitch on Friday at the Oakville Kennel Club's show but came back on Saturday to take Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best of Breed for 3 points. AND the judge, Marjorie Mortrrella from the US, pulled Elsie out in the sporting group too. Marjoried commented that she is "a very pretty bitch". It was a nice way to finish Elsie's championship.

Congratulations to Best of Breed - Charlie!

Congratulations to Elsie's littermate / brother, Charlie (Varazs Kedvesem Final Frontier), who picked up 3 more points towards his Championship over the weekend at the Oakville show after taking Best of Opposite Sex on Friday over a Grand Champion for 1 point and Winners Dog, Best of Winners and Best of Breed on Sunday for 2 more points! Now he is sitting on the 'dreaded 9' meaning he needs only 1 point to finish. We call it the 'dreaded 9' because it can sometimes take a long time to get that final point.
Diva is the first dog ever to earn a UKC agility title in Ontario (and possibly Canada) since this was the very first UKC agility trial held in this province (and possibly this country). She earned 3 first places finishes and a High in Trial on Sunday. (Yes, the UKC gives out HIT rosettes for agility although this club didn't have the rosettes to give out that day.) This was Diva's 18th title!! She's now officially known as CKC/Int'l/UKC CH Varazs Kedves Quickstep CKC: FDJ, AgNJ, AGI, RN, PCD, CGN, AKC: JH,
NA, NAJ, RN, CGC UKC: URO1, CA, AGI
Rufus (CH Blackbullets Varazs Grof Rufus), a senior Vizsla born February 2, 2004 whose owners are now both dead, came to stay with me for several days this past week while I assessed him and helped the breeders find his new forever home.

I am pleased to say he is a wonderful dog! He's in great shape - perhaps a mere 1-2 pounds overweight (I wish I was so lucky!!) and from his records, he seems to be very healthy. Part of one toe - to just above the nail - was amputated, there is one small fatty lipoma on his chest and he has some black spots on his eyelids. I will discuss these with his vet as they can be malignant, but not always. Rufus was wearing an anti-bark collar when I picked him up. Rufus was, understandably, stressed to have his owner die as he was
living alone with him at the time of the owners death. I hadn't seen
him in about 7 years and doubt that he remembered me at all. His owners
always brought him to the dog shows when I showed him so he never
stayed with me.

Day 1 - At my place, he was introduced to his slightly older cousin, Miska and our other two Vizslas. Miska and Rufus share the same maternal grandmother (Am/Can Ch Maritza of Kezdet Nekah Am/Can CD CGC) which makes them cousins. Miska is 7 months older than Rufus; Rufus is now 9.5 yr. I wasn't sure about Rufus' recalls so I kept him firmly and safely on a Flexi to ensure he didn't run away. He didn't really respond well to his name or to a recall command but I chalk that up to too many distractions and stress. Rufus DOES love treats and does love to eat and his appetite certainly wasn't affected. A dog after my own heart!!

Day 2 - Rufus cried a couple of times in his crate overnight. Strange place, still strange smells but he quickly settled until about 8 AM. He was much more relaxed today. Rufus was an only dog so it's taking him a little time to get used to 3 other Vizslas, all similar in size. Rufus was friends with a Cocker Spaniel but Vizslas, as we know, are different. He's had to tell my dogs to give him some space and that's OK.

Day 3 and beyond - Rufus is settling in better with me and my dogs. His only problem is, he does not seem to like my husband very much. This is causing some concern, especially for my husband. From all the reports we received from his family and an acquaintance of mine who owns Vizslas and who occasionally met up with Rufus and his owner at a local dog park, Rufus has always been good with other people, males and females. and dogs. So at this point, I am chalking up this behaviour towards my husband as something that isn't ingrained in him (likely due to the sudden death of his owner and the stress and grief he's going through) and hopefully, he will become positive towards males again. He's a very smart Vizsla (already learning self-control and other new behaviours) so I am very confident his faith in men will be restored.

Here are some photos and videos of Rufus.
A few years ago, he lost his hu-mom and this past Sunday, his beloved hu-dad died unexpectedly at the age of 74. Rufus is presently located in Ontario, Canada. The photo below was taken of Rufus in 2004. I don't have any recent pics of Rufus but most likely he has white on him now due to natural aging. As far as we know, Rufus has had no health issues.

WILD = FUN!

Will(iam), a.k.a. Varazs Kedvesem Final Legacy from our 2011 litter, spent 3.5 days with us over the Labour Day weekend. I had only seen Will once since he went to his new home at 8 weeks of age, so I was thrilled to get to know him as a two-year-old dog. I decided to make it a really fun weekend for him. After all, when "Grandma" (me) does a dog's nails, teeth and bathes him, something has to make up for those 'hardships'! LOL

So, on this weekend, Will went to a United Kennel Club (UKC) dog show, his first show ever!! Below, it's not a perfect stack, but he was quite a natural at this 'beauty show' stuff. Will came home with his first dog show ribbons and some UKC points!

The biggest and best fun, however, was Lure Coursing!! Will had never done before either!

Day 1, Lure Coursing

I gave Will a practice run for his very first time on a course and he was perfect!!! Unfortunately, that practice run didn't count towards his title. :-(

That's a bunny??

At the end of the practice run, he went to check out the 'bunnies' and got a little spooked by what they were - plastic bags. When it came time to do his official run, he started off well but then turned around about 1/3 of the way through and didn't return to the lures. No Q (Qualifying score) on Day 1.

Day 2, Lure Coursing

Will started off the course really well, and then did what any bird dog is bred to do - he POINTED the "bunny". And then, he abandoned the course and ran back to me. He was more confident getting closer to the bunnies but didn't attack them (which is strongly encouraged by the judges!!). I gave him two more practice runs and he wasn't perfect but he was improved so I decided to plunk down money for Day 3's test.

Day 3, Lure Coursing

Will was definitely getting more excited by the coursing. Last night, I "practiced" getting him all excited about a white plastic bag brought one with me to the test to tease Will and that really helped!! The weather was by and large, much cooler than the previous 2 days, although still quite humid.

On his first run, which if he did well, it would be Will's test run and if not, it would be his practice - LOL. Will started out really well - YES!! And then he stopped and pointed! Aarrggh. If this were a field/hunt test, I would be jumping up and down for joy!! But it's a lure course where the dog is expected to chase (exactly what we don't want them to do in field tests). Anyway, he wandered off a bit but then the light bulb went off in his head and he returned to the lures and started to chase them and went all the way around the course!
We had an opportunity to do a practice run after getting his Q just to give him more experience. I really wanted to video it for Will's owners and since my regular video camera wasn't focussing properly, I filmed it on my IPod. As a result, there is no zooming but at least it's clear(er). And now Will has NO fear of those plastic bunnies any more!!
3 of our dogs - Miska, Diva & visiting Elsie - got stung. Tyro was lucky and didn't. Elsie only had 1 sting but Miska and Diva were stung several times. Diva had the most stings, including one over her right eye and several on her rump. I administered Benadryl to all 3 dogs and it seemed to work at first, but after 3 hours, Diva started breaking out into hives and she was terribly, terribly itchy. Of course, it was late on Friday night so off to the emergency vet we went for a shot of steroids to deal with Diva's hives. Now, we have Prednisone on hand, just in case!!

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the great Power Blackout that saw much of
eastern North America plunge into darkness. The outage prompted
emergency declarations, disrupted transit service for days and left
millions with little to no electricity for days. At 4:11 p.m.
today, it will be exactly one decade since the power went out for
more than 50 million people — the largest blackout in North American
history.

I remember that day and this Blackout so well. I was returning home in the late afternoon after having a litter of 10 puppies (our Sasha-Nova litter born June 26, 2003) get their ID tattoos done at a vet clinic in Hillsburgh. While driving home, I noticed several traffic lights were out but thought the situation was just local. The moment I arrived home, my husband greeted me with the news about the power outage and the feeling shared by many that it could be another terrorist attack. Remember, this was August 2003 and the memory of September 11, 2001 when Al Qaeda attacked the twin towers in NYC was still all too fresh and painful in our memories.

Well, we soon learned it wasn't a terrorist attack but a serious power outage that in our case, lasted 3.5 days. With ten rambunctious 7-week old Vizsla puppies to feed and clean up after as well as several adult dogs, it was NOT fun!! And having to let them outdoors at night to potty with only a flash light to keep track of the pups was downright terrifying. I constantly worried about coyote dangers or the pups wandering off into the woods and getting lost.

And since our property is a rural one, we are on a well. Guess what? A well pump won't work without electricity so we were without running water as well during that time. In our case, that meant NO flushing the toilets either!! And it was stinking HOT too at night and during the day and we were sweltering! Until a situation like this occurs, you don't realize that just about EVERYTHING depends on electricity.

The puppies and dogs survived - as far as they were concerned, life was pretty 'normal'! Somehow, we humans survived although it was hell for several days. Some areas were without power for even longer than we were.

Now, we always ensure we have lots of flashlights and batteries on hand as well as a supply of bottled water in the house and if we have time, we need to fill the bathtubs full of water to use to flush the toilets. Lessons learned! And I sure hope we never experience another blackout like that one 10 years ago.
